M1 – Why Projects Fail

Posted on Updated on

Many projects fail due too many different reasons, projects like the Northern Rock, Sinclair C5, and G4S Olympic Security. These projects failed for many reasons. An example is the Sinclair C5 the one reason why that failed is that the design for it was not very well planned, the is because the height of the Sinclair C5 was too low for using on traffic because when driving with other cars, the cars would not be able to see the Sinclair C5 because if the height if it meaning that they have a higher chance of getting hit by another car.

Sinclair C5: With the Sinclair C5 there was many different issues, An issue that is wrong with the Sinclair C5 is that in cold weather the battery depletes quicker meaning when traveling long distances you will not be able to make it due to your battery running out or not having enough power to keep up with traffic which will be causing a hazard on the road. Also with the speed of it the Sinclair it would be a hazard on the road because of fast moving cars and trucks on the road. With that and the size if it any fast moving cars/trucks could easily hit it due to the fact that they could not see it on the road. Another issue with it is that with the actual product was the fact that is did not have a roof meaning that the driver in the Sinclair would be exposed to all of the weather with it not having a roof. The is an major issue meaning that a person could be driving it in heavy rain the driver would not be able to stay focused on the road meaning they could end up crashing into another car causing a big crash involving other cars and also killing the driver of the Sinclair. Overall the Sinclair C5 failed because it was very unpractical and is not very good for driving on the road due to the issues above. In my opinion this project really was not designed correctly and in the safest possible way. I think that this project was not very thought through in the project cycle, E.g. they did not think about the hazard that it would bring when driven on the road.

This is the Sinclair C5 in comparison to other Vehicles on the road

G4S: G4S the Security program that was chosen for the London 2012 Olympics mainly failed due to LOCOGS demand of security staff after they changed their mind.  G4S won the contract to supply the Olympic Games with security staff, at the Start the contract was to supply 2,000 security staff. Meaning that G4S have a year to get the Staff needed witch they could do. However LOCOG decided to change their mind and ask for 10,400 staff off G4S to get. At the start the contract was worth 86m to supply the Olympic Games with 2,000 security staff but with LOCOG then asking for 10,400 security staff G4S need to get paid more money in order to recruit more staff to cover the 8,400 staff needed. So G4S charged LOCOG 248m so they could get the staff they needed, meaning that G4S was over charging LOCOG. So they main reasons why G4S failed was because they could not handle the increase of security staff needed in the short amount of time. Also that fact the G4S over charged LOCOG for the Staff that they needed to cover the Olympic games in London. A way G4S could have stopped them from this is that in the planning for getting the staff was to create a backup plan in planning stage just in case something like this did happen.

Northern Rock: With Northern rock the main reason why it failed was due to its customers and the Bank of England also the fact that they had invested into a risky sale market , this is because when northern rock had a little trouble with their money due to the sale market they and asked to borrow some money off Bank of England they tried to be quite with it so that their customers did not panic. However Bank of England did not do so meaning that everyone who was a customer at northern Rock panicked and tried to get their money out meaning that northern rock had no money meaning they had to close down.

Overall Conclusion

In Conclusion many projects fail or succeed due to how it is planned and carried out through the project cycle. There can be multiple reasons why projects fail. And with the risk that it may fail you may want to have multiple back up plans to stop and failures in your project. For an example for G4S they could have made a backup plan to make sure they have a reserve amount of staff if they were needed or even hire of another company to help them get enough staff. Another thing that could of help from failing is seeing if there is a market for the product you are doing and if people would buy them. For an example if the Sinclair C5 had done some more research and asked the public if they want this and if they would buy it. So that they knew if people would buy them, also seeing and researching if the design was safe to use in the road.

With Northern rock though they could of Seen how the sale market was and thought about investing instead if just investing straight away. Also maybe being a bit more sense able and investing into a safer and stable sales market. Also keeping a decent amount of money in the bank just in case anything like that did happen then they would of had a small amount of money to give to people when needed and that they would be much better situation. Also meaning that if they ask the Bank of England then the customers of Northern Rock would have not panicked as much meaning that they would of not have to closer down
